Chapter Fifteen

She was dreaming of coffee.

“…the case file has to be updated because we’re dealing with a different insured at this point, aren’t we?”

Evy was sure she smelled coffee, but who had turned the news on? Did they get the BBC on cable now? Aunt Marie was so weird. Why was she watching BBC?

“If it’s a living trust, that’s one thing, but her heirs— No, she didn’t have any children.”

She blinked her eyes open and saw the remnants of the night with Rafe.

“Oh.” She sat up. “Ohhhh.” Evy rubbed her eyes and surveyed her bedroom. Well, it was a good thing she wasn’t a neat freak because she didn’t have time to deal with cleaning all this up when she had to be at work at… She glanced at the clock.

“Shit!”

She scrambled out of bed, half falling while her legs were entangled in the sheets. It was already nine o’clock, and she had to be at the convention center in an hour. “Rafe!”

“Let me call you back.” He popped his head in the bedroom. “I asked what time you needed an alarm for last night, but you were already asleep.”

“That is your fault.” She pointed at him. “Exhausting man.”

He grinned. “You weren’t complaining last night.”

“No, of course I wasn’t.” She hissed and pulled on a pair of panties from her dresser, then stood in front of her closet and stared. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to wear.”

Rafe walked to her closet and stared at her hanging clothes. “They don’t have wardrobe for you at the venue?”

“This isn’t a national network—it’s Palm Springs local.” She blinked. “The brief was black, grey, or white with accents of forest green if I wanted any color. We’re sitting in front of that giant kennel club logo most of the time, so it’s the most neutral.”

“I bet you’re gorgeous in green.” He flipped through her closet. “Go get coffee; I’ll pick out your clothes.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Oh really?”

“Hey, I’m a fashionable man.” He motioned to his boxers. “Obviously.”

Evy snorted and walked out to the kitchen. If she didn’t like what he picked, she’d just go with the black suit she wore on Wednesday. No one was really paying attention to what she wore anyway. “Thanks for making coffee.”

“Thanks for the rather fabulous night,” Rafe said. “I have to admit, I was not expecting that when I came over.”

“Oh really?”

“Yes, really.” He had a smile in his voice. “I know the second day of judging is always the most hectic with three groups, and then add to that the news about Bunny.”

She paused while grabbing a mug. “Was that what you were talking about on the phone?”

“Yes. It’s an absolutely heinous crime. I’m fairly sure Bunny was trying to commit fraud, but there’s no way that should have cost her life.” He walked out with a kelly-green satin blouse. “Too bright?”

Evy looked up from stirring two spoons of sugar into her coffee. “Sadly yes. Fraud?”

“Yes.” He walked back into her room. “Are you and your psychic friends helping the police?”

She nearly spit out her coffee.
